Publish a media clip

The status of the media clip refers to its availability: a clip can be ‘published’ or ‘draft’. By default, all newly uploaded media clips are assigned the ‘draft’ status.

Open a media clip and click “publish” or “unpublish” to change the status from draft to published (or vice versa).

Clips can also be auto-published at upload time. See Uploading and Transcoding.

1.0 | Draft

A media clip in draft has restricted access. Only users logged into the platform who have the correct permissions will be permitted to view the media clip. In the Media Library, draft media clips are marked with a grey icon.

Note:

Embedding a draft media clip will give an “unable to play media” error on the page.

2.0 | Published

A published media clip can be viewed on a view page or embedded into a website. Published media clips are indicated in the Media Clips Library with a green icon.

3.0 | Embargo: Scheduled Publishing

The platform offers two embargo types to control when and how a media clip is available to viewers. Both require the clip to have a ‘published’ status; embargo settings have no effect on draft clips.

  • Hard embargo: restricts access to a clip within a defined date and time window. Outside of that window, the player shows a blank playout. The clip itself remains a standard on-demand clip.
  • Soft embargo: changes how the clip is presented. Viewers see a countdown until the scheduled start time. Once it begins, the clip plays from the beginning in live mode. After the clip’s natural duration has passed, it becomes available as a normal on-demand clip. See section 3.2.

3.1 | Hard Embargo

Use the hard embargo to schedule when a published clip becomes accessible to viewers. A start date and time are required; an end date and time are optional.

When a hard embargo is active:

  • Before the start date and time: the player shows a blank playout.
  • Between the start and end date and time: the clip is accessible as a normal on-demand clip.
  • After the end date and time (if set): the clip becomes inaccessible again and the player shows a blank playout.

To schedule publishing:

  • Select a media clip and navigate to the “Content Protection” tab;
  • In the “Embargo” section, click “Schedule Availability”;
  • Set the start date and time that the clip should become available;
  • Optionally, click “Set End Date” and set the date and time after which the clip should no longer be accessible.

Note:

The embargo feature does not work as long as the media clip has a ‘draft’ status. Make sure the clip is published before setting an embargo.

3.2 | Soft Embargo

Use the soft embargo to schedule when an on-demand clip becomes available to viewers. Before the start time, viewers see a countdown timer in the player. Once the start time is reached, the clip becomes available.

Unlike the hard embargo (which simply restricts access), the soft embargo changes how the clip is presented before its start time.

Soft embargo setting

The “Soft embargo” setting might not be available by default. Reach out to your video consultant to enable this setting.

To configure the soft embargo:

  • Availability
    Set a start date and time for the clip to become available for viewers. Before this time, the player shows a countdown timer.
  • Treat as live (optional)
    Enable to present the clip as a simulated live stream from the start time until the clip’s full duration has passed. Once the clip’s duration has passed, it becomes available as a normal on-demand clip. If this option is not enabled, the clip plays as a normal on-demand clip from the start time. See also: Simulated Live.

Set the soft embargo availability to 11:00. The length of the on-demand clip is 50 minutes. With “Treat as live” enabled: the clip will be presented as a live stream from 11:00 to 11:50. At 11:50 the clip can be viewed as a normal on-demand clip. Without “Treat as live”: the clip is available as a normal on-demand clip from 11:00.
