1.3 | Video codecs

The following video codecs are supported as input:

  • H.264 / AVC (MPEG-4 Part 10)
  • H.265 / HEVC (MPEG-H Part 2)
  • AV1
  • VP8 / VP9

1.4 | Audio codecs

The following audio codecs are supported as input:

  • AAC / HE-AAC / AAC+
  • MP3 (MPEG Audio Layer 3)
  • MP2 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)
  • AC-3 (Dolby Digital) / E-AC-3
  • FLAC
  • PCM (all standard variants)
  • Vorbis / Opus
  • Windows Media Audio (WMA)

For the best transcoding results, use the following export settings when delivering source files to the platform.

Recommended container: MP4 (.mp4) is the most universally compatible container and the preferred format for upload.

There is no enforced file size limit. Multipart uploads are supported for large files.

2.1 | Video codec: H.264

H.264 is the recommended video codec for upload. The platform also accepts ProRes and DNxHD/DNxHR as high-quality intermediate formats for broadcast and editing workflows.

  • Profile: Main for standard definition (below 720p); High for high definition (720p and above)
  • Scanning: Progressive

Transcoding always produces progressive output. The platform automatically detects and deinterlaces interlaced source files, but uploading a progressive source yields the best results.

  • Aspect ratio: 16:9 preferred, but any aspect ratio is accepted. Do not letterbox or add black bars: the platform handles aspect ratio automatically.
  • Frame rate: 24–60 fps; the original frame rate is preserved.

Most containers use a constant frame rate (for example, 25 fps). Some use a variable frame rate (VFR), which can cause audio sync issues. Variable frame rate is not recommended.

  • Bitrate (upload source):
    ResolutionRecommended bitrate
    480p2.5–5 Mbps
    720p5–10 Mbps
    1080p10–20 Mbps
    4K / UHD40–80 Mbps

2.2 | Audio codec: AAC

  • Sample rate: 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz; 48 kHz preferred
  • Bitrate (upload source):
    ChannelsRecommended bitrate
    Mono192 kbps
    Stereo320 kbps
    5.1 surround512 kbps

3.0 | Notes for broadcast workflows

3.1 | MXF files

MXF files require special handling. Please contact support@bluebillywig.com to discuss transcoding presets.

3.2 | Interlaced content

For standard uploads, the platform automatically samples 200 frames to detect interlacing and applies deinterlacing when needed. No configuration is required.

MXF files are an exception: automatic detection is not applied. Deinterlacing must be enabled explicitly in the transcoding preset. Contact support@bluebillywig.com to configure this for your MXF workflow.

Uploading a progressive source file always produces the cleanest result regardless of format.
